Doesn't Mac have anything better than "Open with?"

When you double click a file, it usually opens in the program that created it. But sometimes we need to open files in programs other than the one that created it. As you know, we can use Get Info and then in the Open with panel, specify which application to open it with. We can also "Apply to all."

Where it gets tricky is when you use more than one type of program for the same types of files. For example, I use TextWrangler for programing and html files. But I use Mariner Write for word processing stuff like business letters.

So, I can solve that problem by selecting all the files I want to open in TextWrangler and use option/command-i. Then, when I choose the Open-with application I can change the particular batch all at once. I can do the same for MarinerWrite files.

Where it gets screwed up is that I work with the same website files on both my Mac at the office and my Mac at home. I use the FTP program Transmit. So if I upload an html file from home which was created in TextWrangler, and then download it to my office computer by FTP the next day, it wants to open in MarinerWrite.

Is there anyway around this problem. The best way for me would be if I could specify that all files with endings like .htm, .php, .asp open in TextWrangler and text files with no suffex (which are text files) open in MarinerWrite. Or, something like that. Can this be set in Terminal?

Or, is there another solution?

If you don't want to change ALL similar files to open with the same application -
There's a much simpler solution. Drag that file, then drop on the application icon, which can be in the dock. That application will attempt to open the file.
Or, control/right-click on the file, and choose the application that you want to use directly from that menu/open with... That doesn't force a change for that file, but allows you to choose the app on the fly.

Does any of that help you out?

I seem to have been mistaken all along. The Open with panal in Get info does go according to the file ending. I thought it looked at text documents as text documents regardless of the file endings. Hence, I am able to get all .asp files to open in TextWrangler.

Thank you for your comments DeltaMac.
