don't delete mail.app pofile/account

While setting up a new email accoung, I removed my old one from mail.app. This not only removed those account settings, but it also deleted ALL my email associated with that account! Most recent backup: 2 weeks ago.

Upon further research, it appears that there was indeed a warning message that I missed when I deleted the profile, so feel free to call me an idiot.

HOWEVER, I still think that this is a stupid design. Not only is it different from any other email program that I've ever used, but it doesn't even have a forgiving way to back out of the mistake (e.g., the email isn't in my mail.app trash, nor in my OSX trash). It has been completely obliterated.

Am I the only idiot out there who's been hit by this bug (I mean feature)?

pissed and missing 2 weeks worth of email,

Sounds like you were using a POP account -- that downloads all the mail to your program and deletes it off the server. If you're crunched for server space, this is a good method of getting email, but not the safest by far!

I've switched to using IMAP all the time since discovering it years ago. Even if you delete your account, your messages are still on the server, and all you have to do is re-configure your account and you can still get your email.

I know this really doesn't help with your current problem, but it may help you in the future to avoid this catastrophe. And don't worry about it -- even the best of the best make silly mistakes sometimes. We're only human.
