Downloading Preferences

Whenever i download anything and try to open. it always says" this file is not recognizable format." it also says, " if you know the file is from another program which is incompab;e with microsoft excel----click cancel and then open this file in original application." please tell me how to set it up.

We need a lot more information to even begin to diagnose your problem... basics first:

What kind of Mac are you using?
What version of Mac OS X are you using?
What browser are you downloading with? (Safari, IE, Firefox, etc.)
What exact files are you downloading (provide a link if at all possible)?
