Dual 2.3 G5 Tower not booting

Hi,

My late model dual 2.3 G5 Tower (pci-e) is playing up and refusing to boot at times.

It started with the occasional turning itself off during sleep or wake up but has now progressed to the point where booting from scratch has become an issue.

When the power button is pressed, the system briefly turns on and then off. Removing the power cord and the battery for several minutes fixes the problem (I've tried a new battery and cleaned the contacts) but I'm having to do this more frequently now.

Any thoughts?

Cheers!

Mike

PowerMac G5 computers are notorious for going bad -- especially the ones that are liquid-cooled (versus air-cooled). I don't believe the dual 2.3GHz is liquid cooled, but still, they are notorious for various problems.

If you can get it to boot, try starting up with the AHT CD (Apple Hardware Test) that was included with the computer along with the install/restore CDs/DVDs. Run the extended test in loop mode and see if it reports any problems.

Yes, it's an air-cooled model

Unfortunately, I don't have the original disks.

I bought this machine off ebay to replace an older liquid cooled g5 that expired about a year ago. Should have updated to an intel but have a lot of older software still in use that requires Tiger.

You should have held onto the liquid cooled one and contacted Apple about it if it died from leaking coolant. apple was paying to fix or in some cases replace those machines. I haven't had one come across me for about 6 months but at that time Apple payed for all the parts and labor for me to fix it.

With this machine you might want to test the 36v battery and make sure it is reading around 3.6v. Otherwise try resetting the SMU. Sounds like it needs a power supply otherwise.

The issue with the liquid cooled machine wasn't a leak. It was motherboard related.

- I did put a new battery in (3.6v - checked) & cleaned contacts
- Tried reseting the SMU

[Edit: nevermind, I completely misread the last post so a large chunk of stupidity was removed from this section]

I have an MDD dual-G4 machine here that's exhibiting the same problems (intermittent powering on, suddenly shutting off, refusal to wake from sleep, momentary blink of the power light and no powering on, etc.). It turned out to be the power supply, and, unfortunately, the MDD isn't exactly an easy power supply to come by for very cheap and modding an ATX power supply just ain't my style.

It may be worth checking the power supply for fluctuations, or maybe even checking the mains that it's connected to.
