DV decks not recognized - FCP 5 with Tiger

Since installing OS X 10.4.7, Final Cut Pro 5 is not recognizing my external DV decks, and as a result I can't capture, 'print to video', or see video playback on external monitor.

System is as follows:
G5 Dual 1.8 GHz
1.5 GB DDR SDRAM
nVIDIA GeForce FX 5200 64MB VRAM
LaCie D2 250GB
LaCie 1394 80GB
Maxtor 160GB (internal)

Before installing Tiger everything was working fine, just the occasional problem with one of the decks - but never BOTH decks, and never after restarting and replugging and refreshing etc. I have reset the PRAM as I saw suggested in another thread, but no improvement. External drives are working fine. Everything is connected via Firewire 400.

Your ideas are most appreciated...

You should always keep this solution in the back of your mind and share the solution. I say this because there are probably others with the same exact problem.
