DVD drive opinion?

I have a Lacie D2 8x DVD writer and the dual layer version came out about 1 month after I bought mine (about 3/4 months ago) for the same price (£140), basically I want a dual layer drive and I've been thinking about selling for mine for about £90 on Ebay and buying a Pioneer 108 internall drive for £55.

What do you think guys?

Nope, won't be any faster. DVD/CD drives don't write enough data at once to take full advantage of either the ATA or the FireWire bus.

I would definitely go internal if you want to burn DVDs from within the iApps.

Thats great, thanks Bob, I think I'll order the Pioneer 108 :)

Thanks for the help guys, any tips on configuring the drive in OSX or is it straight forward?

Keep in mind that the 108 has to be patched to use it in Panther and be completely recognized. Rumorred to be fully supported in Tiger.

You can find links and references to Patchburn II (the software that will help all the iApps "see" the 108) on http://www.xlr8yourmac.com, as well as find illustrated install guides for many drives and Macintosh models.

Good luck, and let me know how it goes! I recently opted for a 107 instead of the 108, simply because I wouldn't have to patch anything and really have no use for dual-layer media at the moment. With DVD-R drives hovering around $100, it shouldn't be a problem to rid myself of this 107 and get a 108 when it's fully supported.

Kinda off subject, but I just ran the patch burn program and now my HP 420 works in the iApps. Nice not having to use toast all the time.
