DVD zones

little green rosetta
Hullo Macfolks - I bought my iBook G4 (OsX.3.9) in the UK shortly before moving to South America. Watched a few DVDs one side of the Atlantic, now watching a mixture from north and south of the equator. What happens when I run out of opportunities to switch DVD zone? Is there no hack at all to reset the count? I can't afford a DVD player or a TV, so aside from lurking here, my only source of entertainment is rented DVDs. Oh, and nookie.
With all the canny, user-friendly genius of OsX I can't believe I can only switch DVD zone 6 times.
Any suggestions?
Cheers,

Already got VLC. Hadn't thought to try it wi DVDs. Will do next one I rent.
Manymanymanymanymany thanks,

...though it still sounds like a shitty limitation of MacOsX given all the things it does let you do. Why set a limit at all?

My impression is that Apple's hands are tied in the matter. Region codes are part of the DVD standard, and there are all sorts of stupid laws to enforce all their stupid rules in stupid ways.

If you could change the region code on your DVD players whenever you wanted, then what would be the point of region codes at all? Region codes are designed to prevent you from playing movies, plain and simple. It's stupid, but somewhere down the line someone in charge thought it was a good idea.

But hey, at least there's VLC.

True enuff, but it rather makes a mockery of the 'Take it anywhere in the world' laptop principle. Take it anywhere in the world, but don't you dare watch a commercially exploitable DVD, damn you.
But as you say, at least there's VLC. Bless 'em.

Apple's hands are tied indeed - it's all got to do with copyrights / distribution rights, etc.

I suggest you Google or Yahoo! for DVD Info X and Region X - both are utilities (freeware, if memory serves right) that can hack into your DVD Region settings.

There are basically two different internal DVD player versions around: in the West, afaik, mainly the ones that have a hardware region lock - in Asia the ones that have a software region lock.

Both can be reset - though the hardware one is a bit riskier.

Hope this helps!
