The original install disk that came with the Mac have one disk that has printed on one "Hardware Test". Just find that disk and boot to that CD while holding down the 'option' key while booting (with the disk in the drive) to select the disk as the startup and choose "Hardware Tests".

Put in the OS X install disk and boot (startup) from it. Does the problem remain when booted from the install disk? If so, the problem is a hardware problem, not a software problem.

If it is a hardware problem, it is most likely due to bad third party RAM. The only good way to test this is to remove all non-Apple RAM and reseat the Apple RAM and see if things get better.

If it is not a RAM problem, disconnect all non-Apple hardware, even third party mouse and keyboard, and see if things clear up. If they do, you can add back one device at a time until you find the offending peripheral.
