Today I set up a new email acct with my new isp. I cancelled service with my old isp, then started Mail. I was prompted for a password for the acct that I no longer have, so I opened preferences and deleted the old acct, now all my old email is gone. Can I get it back somehow?

POP accounts.

Mac OS 10.3.9
Mail 1.3.11

If you deleted the account associated with a POP account, then your emails are gone. You can restore them from the backups that you regularly keep -- emails associated with that account would be located in ~/Library/Mail (you may want to check this directory anyway -- maybe by some strange means they're still located in there). Time Machine under Leopard would be the simplest solution -- restore that directory from the day before you deleted the account and your email should return. You can then archive the email from that account by moving it to a local folder under "On My Mac" in Mail.app, then safely delete the account.

If you do not have a backup, then you're looking at professional data recovery at the most, or trying out one of many "data rescue" applications for Mac. Data Rescue II works sometimes -- although file recovery is more of an "art" than a "science" in the sense that there are too many factors that can wildly affect the success of a data recovery procedure. Data Rescue II has a downloadable trial, if I'm not mistaken:

If you require these emails and they have significant importance, my recommendation would be to completely stop using that computer immediately. Shut down, unplug, the whole she-bang. The longer you use the computer, the more chance that the places those files are located on the hard drive will be overwritten from new data occurring while you use the computer. http://www.drivesavers.com is a popular data recovery service, and many more can be found with Google searches. Be aware that professional data recovery is typically expensive -- from a few hundred to a few thousand dollars sometimes.
