Empty folder until new item is added

Here's a strange problem....

When decompressing a downloaded file (ZIP, GZIP etc.) the folder shows up as empty on my Mac, which I find very strange.
However, if I add an item to that folder all of a sudden I see lots of other items there as well, showing that the folder indeed wasn't empty after all!

In addition to downloaded files I've had the same occurance recently when connecting my cellphone to my Mac via USB, and when browsing through the phone's folders which displayed as empty (very odd I thought) I did the same trick: copying an item from my Mac to the phone's folder, and all of a sudden I could see its contents.

It seems like a folder has to be "initialized" somehow in order to show its contents.
Why is this happening and how can I prevent it from continuing to happen?

Glad to see I wasn't just imagining things ;)

Yes, Stuffit Expander may be one source of the problem, but that doesn't explain why the contents of my mobile phone also showed up with completely empty folders until I added something to them. I had to do this with every folder (and sub-folder I think) of the phone.
Ever since I did that the phone's contents have displayed its contents correctly.

As someone pointed out in that thread you linked to, it may be more of the Finder's/MacOS' fault than Stuffit Expander.
But why and how?
