Error -40 is a positioning error (tried to position before start of file).
This might indicate file system corruption. Try running Apple's Disk
Utility: First Aid and repairing the disk till it shows clean.
If you are still having problems report back with what version of Entourage
you are using and what OS you have installed.

Last week, I had tried to rebuild MS Entourage database manually. But, it failed repeatedly. Then, I got the free demo of an alternative from http://www.stellarinfo.com/email-repair/entourage-recovery/entourage-recovery.php
I can say, it is a good alternative to Inbuilt database repair method.
