I have system 10.6.0 on a power mac. I use quicken 2007 and office 2004 and have not had any trouble until yesterday. I have not updated anything or downloaded anything. I started up the computer the next morning and none of these programs will launch. All other programs seems to be working fine. I ran disk utilities and disk warrior and no luck. I tried to reinstall office and and the installer won't launch. I am baffled. Here is the crash message I get.

Office 2004, and Quicken 2007 are both using Rosetta. The Office 2004 installer would also need that. So, something has happened to Rosetta in your OS X system.
Boot to your OS X installer DVD, and run Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. Run the Repair Disk test (different from Repair Disk Permissions.)
Download and reinstall the 10.6.8 combined installer (that's a tip that often fixes glitchy little problems that might appear in OS X when there's no other obvious reasons.)
Here's the combined installer: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1399
After that completes, and your Mac restarts - run your Disk Utility, and repair permissions.
That process may get you going again.

Thanks for the help. I tried what you said and it didn't work. Since I had the DVD in I re installed the whole system. When I tried to launch quicken a message came up saying i need rosetta to run this program, would you like to instal it? So I did. After I installed it I tied to launch quicken and got the original message I posted. Is there some sort of virus or malware going around that is affecting rosetta? It is the only thing I can think of that would cause something like that.

"virus or malware" affecting only rosetta? Highly unlikely, and certainly not the only possibility. More likely is a corrupted setting or cache file. Uninstalling Office, then reinstalling probably won't help anything, if a setting file, or .plist, is causing the issue.
Is your Office installer still not working, if you wanted to try an uninstall?

Does your Office or Quicken run, if you are logged in to another user? Create a new user just for this purpose, through your Accounts pref pane.

I just logged in as a different user and they worked. The first thing I thought of before was a corrupt preference file and trashed some .plist but I guess it was the wrong ones. Any idea which ones I should look for? Thank a lot for the help, I really appreciate it.

I tried looking for something specific, but I'm not sure what file or files would affect both.
Very often, if you find that you have a user-specific problem, then you can move your own Preferences folder to the desktop. Log out, then log back in to your user. Your user account will be back to original defaults, so you can simply change the settings to what you like. The Preferences folder will be recreated automatically. If you find that your crashing software is now working OK, then you don't have to do much more. When all is working OK (try out some of your other apps, too!), then you can drag the old Preferences folder to the trash and empty the trash....

I went under my user/library/preferences. Did what you said, moved the preferences to the desk top, logged out and then logged back in. No luck, quicken/word still will not open.

Are you sure this isn't a virus? I'm running 10.6.8 on a Macbook Pro, and as of March 25, no Microsoft apps will launch, producing a crash report like the one above (Office 2004, Windows Media Player). I can't even launch Remove Office or the installer.
