Extensis Suitcase X1 - Crashing!

Hi

I'm having a problem with suitcase X1. It launches fine but when I try and add and fonts it just crashes out. I have tried removing the suitcase prefs folder and plist file but still I get the same problem.

If I log in to a different profile on the machine it doesn't crash! Is there anything that I'm missing that needs to be deleted or moved?

Has anyone experienced this problem?

In the meantime I had to get the user to use fontbook!

Not really any help to your problem but I stopped using Suitcase ages ago when I discovered Linotype FontExplorer X. It's a free download from Linotype, is free, powerful and more importantly it never crashes on me like Suitcase did at the first sign of a corrupt font! Don't know the download address but Google will find it.

Nice, I will give it a go....unfortunatly most of the designers in my office use suitcase and if it's working they will not want to change!!! I can move them gradually though!

Wow! I've never seen a direct response from Extensis before!

Except for some auto-activation issues (don't autoactivate for illustrator CS) FontExplorer is a great option for your user: http://www.linotype.com/fontexplorerX

I always had to accept various font issues with Suitcase and so when I went to FE and saw how easy it was to use, and to resolve conflicts, I went for it. The price doesn't hurt.

Extensis might be better if you're running a big shop and need more support.

One thing: Make sure you don't store any of your user fonts in Library/Fonts. Keep only system fonts here and create a folder in the second layer of the hard drive directory named CREATIVE FONTS, or the like.

I will say that Fusion isn't a better option than Suitcase; one studio went so far as to uninstall it and go back to suitcase after it would not start up without crashing.
 
I am having the same problem. The machine we are having this problem with is a non-intel G5 with mac os 10.4.11.

Have you been able to fix this problem?
 
I di try the new program that you suggested, but I was unable to find the "free" version that you mentioned. Am I missing something?

Will I need to uninstall Extensis Suitcase on my Mac with Snow Leopard OSX 10.6.2? Could I also use Font Book (comes with Leopard?) — but still have to clean up the previous mess in some way?
 
Ok, I won't, but your instructions really are quite brief, and just recommend installing Font ExplorerX — not really how to do it, unless I'm missing something. And what about my question about uninstalling Extensis X1. I found instructions online from Extensis as to how to do that. Do I follow those and then download and install Font ExplorerX or do I need to upgrade to the Pro version with Leopard? Sorry I'm not very technically astute. Feel like a child . . .

As for Extensis and Font Doctor, don't delete them just make sure you disable any fonts they are trying to manage (I cover FontBook but not Extensis in my blog post).

Font Doctor is actually really good at fixing fonts.

If you ever want to fully uninstall apps, I hear AppDelete is a great one for that: http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/31123 (This site has a version for 10.5 Leopard and a link to v.3 for Snow Leopard).

Or...you could invest a little bit of money and roll out Universal Type Server and the Client, it's so much better than Suitcase and Suitcase fusion as it means the creatives are unable to drag in whatever fonts they fancy plus everyone is working from the same font set which in turn will reduce font corruption, duplication and reduce the amount of time you spend resolving font related issues! I say it's money well spent!
