External Drive Problems

Hi, I have an external hard drive that I connect to my computer via an IDE-> USB adapter. The drive worked once. When it mounted for the first time, I tried to copy a large file to it, but the copy froze and Mac OS X unexpectedly quit (forcing me to restart the computer.) Now, whenever I plug the drive in, it shows up in Disk Utility, but it cannot mount. When I try mounting it, I get an error message saying:

"The disk “Untitled” could not be mounted.
Try running First Aid on the disk and then retry mounting."

Also, when I try doing first aid, I get an error message saying:

"Disk Utility stopped repairing “Untitled” because the following error was encountered:
Filesystem verify or repair failed."

And finally, when I try to erase and reformat the disk, I get an error message saying:

"Volume Erase failed with the error:
No such file or directory"
or sometimes it says:

"Disk Erase failed with the error:
Could not unmount disk."

But the disk IS unmounted! It couldn't mount in the first place!
What can I do to fix this disk? Is there a program I can obtain that can help me? I have tried mounting the disk on multiple computers to no avail.
Thanks,
Sam
