External Firewire Drive mounting difficulties

I have a Fantom 120 GB drive that finally mounts after turning it on and off several times. Basically it starts mounting and clicks and the light turns red.
This happens on my tower and laptop. I'm running 10.3.4. What do I need to do to fix this?

sounds like the enclodure might be on its last legs. I had the same experience with a LaCie external drive. I bought a new enclosure and haven't had any problems since.

Have you tried swapping the disk with another enclosure (or installing it in a new Mac or PC)? That would rule of issues with the HDD itself.

What kind are you looking for? FireWire or USB 2.0?

If FireWire, I can recommend the Bytecc ME-320F enclosure. It supports both 5.25" and 3.5" devices, so it's good for both hard drives and CD/DVD/Optical drives as well. It's also got a cooling fan, which I believe to be essential in an enclosure, for great cooling.

It is a large enclosure, though, so if you're looking for something portable, you may want to look elsewhere. If you intend on using it as a permanent desktop drive, I would highly recommend it.
