External Hd Compatibility Question

Hello!

I have an older Mac Pro running 10.6.8. I am looking at getting an external HD so I can back it all up before upgrading my OS. All of the external drives I find say they need a minimum of 10.7 to be compatible?

Im looking at this one now:

https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=22-235-163

I read through the instruction manual and it says this for compatibility:

"Compatibility can vary, depending on hardware configuration and operating system."

I guess my ultimate question is will this drive just be a plug and play for 10.6.8 even though it says 10.7? Im not going to be running any operating system from this drive, Im only going to be using it for backup storage. Im pretty sure it will work fine but want to make sure before I buy it.

Any help would be appreciated,

Thanks,

Historically, OS X had the biggest change with Tiger (OS X 10.4).
Anything later, such as your Snow Leopard, would be OK, as long as the external hardware properly supports the large capacity hard drives (larger than 2TB).
The WD that you listed from NewEgg comes with a 4TB drive, so should be fine.

Problems happen when folks purchase an empty drive enclosure, and put the drive of their choice, finding out later that the enclosure doesn't support that huge 8TB drive that they wanted to use. You don't have that situation.
As long as your external supports OS X, you should be good to go with 4TB.
