Did you go to Finder->Preferences? Use the desktop Finder (the desktop when no applications is running and the menu says"Finder") and go to Preferences and make sure the "Show these items on the Desktop" check boxes are checked?

The hd shows up in Disk Utility but shows the following when trying to verify or repair disk:

Verifying volume “Macintosh HD2”
Volume check failed.

Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)

1 volume checked
0 HFS volumes verified
1 volume failed verification

I had the same problem with an external USB 2 Hard drive.
Won't show up on the desktop of my DP 2.0 G5 even when the system
profiler sees it. After leaving it hooked up for 3 days(after restarting
a couple of times) and hoping for a miracle to happen, it still wouldn't appear.

It finally appeared when I plugged it into the USB port of my
Apple LCD, but I didn't want to tranfer chunks of .mov files
through a USB 1.1 port.

I gave up and plugged the drive into my Powerbook,
got the data out and reformatted the drive from the PB's Disk Utility tool.
now it appears on my G5's desktop much more consistantly.
Apart from some quirky things here and there, the G5's been great,
though I am looking out for potential problems in this forum faced
by other G5 owners.

Good Luck
