External speakers not showing

I have Logitech Z4speakers which have worked just fine, but suddenly (after itunes 8.1.1 upgrade and 10.5.6 upgrade) they no longer show up in sys prefs. I see that this is not an unknown problem, but I can't find a solution anywhere! Help! Bring back my way-more-decent-than-internal-speakers-audio!

Did you unplug the audio port, restart then plug them back in? Plus did you go to System Preferences->Sound and select the speakers as Audio-Out?

Whoa! Just take the speaker plug out, restart, then put it back in! Who'da thunk? Here I've been verifying disk permissions, then even restoring core software....My problem is similar: every so often, my sound options drop out. Even the boot up sound. My OS is Tiger-10.4.7 on an Intel Mini. I use the headphone jack to output to my stereo. So I take it this is a known problem with "external speakers"?

Anyway: my first post here, and I don't yet know how to thank, so: Thanks!

Also I good old Mac trick is to Reset Your PRAM. It will not hurt ant files and will reset some chips in the Mac back to default. Resetting it sometimes cleans ups connection problems to third party device, especially USB & FireWire.

I'll try that right now, as speakers cutting out keeps happening, despite the work-around.

I just looked at the link, and the combination of keys at startup jogged my memory. I used to do that all the time in System 9, that, and rebuild the desktop. I'm still not quite used to applying maintenance in OS X. For instance: I really wish to de-frag, but I was told OS X does that on its own if you leave the computer on long enough.
