Fax Preferences Gray/Blocked

I was just setting up my mom's fax preferences. Clicked the option to show fax status in finder bar, then clicked "sharing" tag. The "fax" tag went gray, and now I cannot access it.

How do I get it unstuck?

O.K let's try some things. First lets see if your Mac still sees the fax modem. Go to to the top left Apple button and click on it (while holding down the the "option" key) and this will bring down the drop-down and in there will be "System Profiler" . This application will let you see and the devices and other things about your Mac. This way you will see if the mac still sees the fax modem. Let us know if it does plus Reset Your PRAM to reset all the ports on a Mac. Let us know if the mac sees the modem and the cable is still connected.

...but it is still blocked. Here is the re-submission of my question. Maybe this explains it better:

10.4.X (Tiger)
PLATFORM Apple Macintosh (PowerPC G4)
MODEL Mac Mini G4/Power Mac 10.1
PROC 1.41 GHz
RAM 1 GB
DRIVE 512

I have the exact same computer, unplugged my mom's, plugged in mine to all the same peripherals, and my fax preferences are fine. Thought I could set up to send via pdf online. A former co-worker used to send faxes from his computer, thought I could do it without actual fax machine and was trying to figure it out when the preferences suddenly blocked. Is it possible to do what I am trying to do, and do how do I un-block my mom's?

Out on a limb with a weird question... Is there a printer installed on your mom's computer? Was reading this article which says that in Tiger, fax options can be greyed out when printing if there isn't a printer installed first. Article shows how to set up a dummy printer to get around this.

Let us know if that helps at all.

The solution was easy, one of those that comes to mind just before sleep. I located the fax .plist, removed it, restarted, and voila! Faxing tab is now accessible.
