I have a file that was generated in a Mac program, but stored on Windows server. The file was then be backed up or just copied with any windows system. The copy is then not usable on a MAC. Any suggestions? Please help if anyone knows how to make the copies usable on a MAC again.

Most likely it's lost its resource fork.

Try opening the application that originally created the file, then do a command-O (or "Open" from the "File" menu) and see if the program will open the file that way. If so, it's a simple matter of re-saving the file to regain the resource fork.

If that doesn't work, try renaming the file with the appropriate extension (.qxd for QuarkXPress documents, .psd for PhotoShop documents, .eps for EPS files, etc.) and then try the above procedure again.

It has lost its resource fork. Unfortunatelly it will not open in the program. It is a scientific analysis software and these are image files of unknown flavor. We have been trying to use ResEdit, copy the resource fork from a good file and paste it into the bad one, but that has not went so well either. I have found a plugin for resedit called forker, but I do not know anything about it and have not tried it yet. Other roads to try?
