Fire Wire Problems

Problem #2...

I have 6 new iBooks for my animation class, and I am using framethief (framethief.com) and Sony Mini DV cams connected through the fire wire ports.

The fire wire ports seem to shut off at random times and cancel the live feed, they will do this with a portable HD as well.

I've taken them down to the apple store and everything tests fine.

Thoughts?

Thanks

Justin

Just a thought: did you set the energy saving settings to 'Highest Performance'? If you don't know what I am talking about, just open System Preferences -> Energy Saver -> Optimize Energy Settings: "Highest Performance". Make sure to choose the same settings for Battery Power and Power Adapter. Maybe this will help you out?!

can you specify those random times? Such as 5-50min..
What operating system are those ibooks using? Could it be a prob with the DV cam? You said even firewire discs would get randomly canceled.. I wonder what happenes if you boot one book into the target mode and mount the disc in another ibook.

Hmmm... another thing to check is the energy saver settings other than the processor -- are the systems set to sleep, or go into a screen saver or anything like that at a specified time? For a live system, it would be a good thing to disable all sleep options and screen saver options.

Actually the 'Highest Performance' in the Optimize Energy Settings means that there is no energy saving activated.

What? You mean you can't have it set to "Highest Performance" and have the computer go to sleep after a specified amount of time?

I thought that "Highest Performance" only applied to the speed cycling of the processor, and not the sleep settings of the monitor or computer...

When Optimize Energy Settings is set to Highest Performance, sleep mode will be set to Never. When you move the sleep mode bar to 2h or so, the settings for Optimize Energy Settings will jump to Custom. What you are actually confusing it with is the Processor Performance which is under options.

Ah, cool -- thanks for clearing that up. I'm not fortunate enough to own a machine new enough to support the processor throttling and advanced energy saver options... :(

So I have tried all of this and the port still stalls out and the apple shop keeps testing them as being ok.

Maybe it's the software...

Ahhh, I missed that hdd-thing. Is it possible for you to plug a regular webcam to your firewire port and test? Maybe the apple store can plug one of their isights to your ibook and see, if it does shut down.
