Firewire audio problems

The volume controls aren't working well. I'm using a M-Audio Firewire Audiophile external sound device. There seems to be a headphone level control on the left which sort of works (its continuous so you never know where you are in its range) and a "Level Controller" on the right which doesn't do anything to the sound yet it controls the sound bar in Sys Prefs/Sound. I downloaded the 10.4.11 driver from M-Audio.

Are you describing a problem with the hardware controls, or with software controls?

Does this link from the M-Audio support site help you at all?

I don't have your FireWire interface, but after reviewing the downloaded user guide - Seems that both of those controls are software assignable.

Have you checked if those controls are properly assigned with the setup software?

Are you using analog? or optical/digital inputs/outputs with your interface?

I was daisy-chaining 4 firewire devices with the Mac Mini. Is that pushing it I wonder? I have a powered Firewire hub around here somewhere. I should dig it out and see if it makes any difference. It sure would be nice if you could daisy-chain firewire devices and not have to have all of them powered on to be able to use all of them. But it does seem to be a limiting factor of the design. Thankfully firewire hubs are inexpensive.
