First mac, Need your help!

Hey everyone, first post here and first mac. I picked up a powermac g5 with dual 1.8 processors for $80 with no hard drive. I ordered a western digital 500gb 7200rpm sata drive. Got that today, I just installed the hd, and the computer won't power on. Press the button and it lights up for 1 sec, fan jumps but doesnt spin, gives out 1 click of a noise and turns off.

When installing the hd, i didnt have the oem drive to use the brackets from, so its just sitting in the bottom bay with the wires hooked up. Any help here would be awesome, I'd love to use my mac!

Is the power cable from the back of the machine to the wall mac specific? The one that came with it is just a no name.

Thanks a billion everyone!

Pulled battery, volt meter reads 3.6v, re checked to see if all ram was seated correctly, it is.

On the HD its self, there are the 2 plugs which plug in fine to the wiring in the G5 case. Then there is a 8 pin square connector. Assuming that is left unplugged as there isn't anything to plug into it. Correct?

Thanks everyone, hopefully someone can shed some light for me.

Are there DIP switches on the HD? If so, they must be set up for a Mac.

If all OK there, insert a RETAIL OS Install disk (OS 10.5 is the highest you can use on that Mac), hold down the 'C" key until it starts to load. When the disk is finished starting up, go to the top and find 'Utilities" Click it and go to to 'Disk Utility. From there, you'll need to format your HD before you can install the OS. After formatting, you can proceed to installing. Simplified, but must be followed. Ask if you need further details.

Those are jumpers, and not DIP switches. SATA should not need any configuration, beyond formatting with Disk Utility, so you can install OS X on the drive.
Do you have the OS X installer DVD?
What OS X version is listed on the label?

The shutoff should concern you. disconnect the hard drive, and try the power again. You should get video, then (with no hard drive attached) you should get a flashing folder, indicating that there is no booting system found.
If it simply shuts off again (again, with no hard drive installed), then I think you have a bad power supply. Not cheap (will be more the $80, anyway)

It does the same thing with or with out the HD installed. Press the power but and it makes one click, LED lights white for one second and thats it.

I reset the SMU by pressing the button on the board inside. Same problem. Screen says no signal, press the power button: one click is hear, led comes on for one second and thats it nothing more. Can I test the power suppy?

I bought a new battery, but I highly doubt that it is the problem. I am going to attempt to test voltage of the psu first. Plus the battery was $22, so if I don't open it, I can take it back!

Anyother Ideas, any info on testing logic bored, feel free to inform me :)
