so I download xiphqt 0.1.8 to my PowerBoox G4 and drag the XiphQT bundle to my Library/Components folder. I try to play a .flac file and.....nothing. Any suggestions?
Unfortunately, the Xiph component does not support .flac files — it supports the FLAC codec, but only when it's contained in a .ogg file.
Perian doesn't support flac files, either. Bummer.
You can play flac files in QuickTime using QuickTime FLAC Plugin, but that won't let you import into iTunes. You MIGHT be able to get it to work with some plist/type-code tricks (I once did something similar way back in OS 9 to get AACs to play), but that would probably leave you with no tag support and perhaps some other little gotchas.
thanks, mikuro. I thought that was the case with Perian (it also had some bad reviews but it looks like you support it). Anyone using FLAC have an app that they particularly like?
Apparently VLC can play FLAC files. Cog is what I use to play ogg files. From what I have read, it can handle FLAC files as well. I cannot test that, since I have no such files.
