flashing "?" @ startup

accidently deleted something form my 12in g4 powerbook, tried to fix using utilities, now all I get is the dreaded flashing ? over a smiley mac folder. help please...
 
That means that no bootable OS exists on the drive.

Sounds like you may have deleted a critical system file. What, exactly, did you delete?
 
not really sure what i deleted, have spent another couple of hours today trying to boot from os x install disks f(rom another g4 powerbook, though slightly older) whilst holding down the c key, to no avail. Also fiddled with utilities via target mode to the afore mentioned g4, and have now managed to wipe the whole laptop, will i need to purchase new os x or am i just skiing uphill?
