An easy workaround is to create an encrypted disk image (using "Disk Utility") that you can mount and unmount when you need it. Encryted disk images are password-protected and very safe. If you forget the password, bye-bye data, as there is no way of "cracking" back into an encrypted disk image (or, at least, no easy way that any common person could do).
