Format and Re-Install ... How.. ?

K guys, i only have a MERE 10Gb hard drive on my iBook, which does REALLY Suck! ... but hey, i ain't one to moan!

However, its come to a point where, i'd like to format it, freshen it up, and well, get some back on my Lil' hard Drive!

but i've NEVER really touched installations before, my iBook came with 10.0, and 9.1. And all i have done is updates!

Now, i want to format the WHOLE thang, and be left with Jaguar and Classic, i never need boot into 9 again, which i guess saves me space...
but i ask, how do i go about it?!

I, too, have the 10 gig iBook and I know what you mean, Neyo. It seemed like so much space a year ago that I could never fill it up. Now I have 30 gig of MP3 files sitting on CD backup and never load any as I haven't the room.

I have just done what you're asking, although I am choosing to gorgo classic altogether and run pure jaguar, so here goes:

Okay, once you've got everything you need backed up safely (don't forget your address book, your email account and your bookmarks) here's what you do:

- Put the jaguar CD in the drive.

- Reboot while holding the C key.

- Follow the prompts until you get to "select install location". You pick your hard-drive, and before clicking 'next', you go to the 'options' button.

- The third option is for a format and clean install. Pick this one.

- I'd also suggest in the next step picking the customise install option (its down there somewhere, I can't remember where, but you'll find it) and unselecting all the language-localisations you won't need. Each language eats another 20-50 megs.

- Keep following the prompts to install jaguar.

Finally, one little warning. I did this method and found there was no straightforward way to import the addressbook.addressbook file from 10.1 into the new 10.2 client, but there's an automated import that runs after install. Problem is if you run the mail app and look for an import option, it'll decide its already done upgrading and you'll be up the creek. The way around this is to put your Addresses/addressbook.addressbook file into your home library before you run mail. (I found I could delete the mail folder in application preferences and it would run its first-time import routine).
The other option is to export vCards when you back up 10.1.

ok symphonix, Thanks VERY much for ya time, i appreciate that! I've exported my
IE Favourites
iCal Calenders
...and...

My 'archived' mail

the only thing i am anxious about, is the address book backup.

If i export 'all' vcards (see Screenshot) ...then in theory, thats all i need to do right? ... i can merely re-import them, when Jaguar's installed!?

As for Jaguar, So is it really as easy as it sounds?! ... u mean, there's no

FDISK, Format C:/s ...yada?

Well, sounds promising!

The Customized install sounds ideal, especially with iPod like Size hard Drive?! ... but i have to say, i am finding my ibook more and more usable, it runs pretty well now! ... the 10.2.1 update made an unexpected increase in performance, maybe I'm being paranoid, or something, but it Mos definitely seemed better! :D

Once again, thanks! :d

I think you want to select all your contacts, then do an "Export vCards" intead of the Group vCard thingy. I think the group vCard thing will only export one card with your group information in it, not the actual vCard of the group members.

Try making a folder on your desktop, then selecting all your contacts, then doing an "Export vCards" and export them into that folder. It should make one vCard for each contact, which would make you good to go.

Ah! ... SELECT ALL ... and Just DRAG Them into a Folder!! Sweet, that Works .... So Simple, i didn't think of it!! lol

Right, now, i think you're right, i am good to go!! :D

Thanks! .... i hope i don't have to come back, and say, it WON'T bloody install! lol

Peace

LMAO ... MAN!!! i am such a dumbass! ... as soon as you start the installer, it asks to restart!! haha! ... Man i am Dumb.. . (Ok Guys, SHUDDUP, don't rubbit IN!! )

... the worst part is, i can do it Blindfolded on a PC... even installed Linux too, but this is like... Well, another Conquest... *fingers Crossed!*

NeYo

...This really Does seem Too Simple to be true! ...hmmmm...

...Well, it looks Promising! :D ... I'll keep this Live! Commentary for all my Worshipping Fans! ;)

He he ... I know the feeling Neyo. I found my little 10gig iBook 500 really came to life when I upgraded to Jaguar. It doesn't look particularly different, but it feels worlds better in terms of performance.

For me that firewall thingy is really impressive. Sherlock 3 is about as useless as a norweigian phonebook here in australia (though the translator is pretty cool), and iChat would be really great if I convince my friends to move to AOL rather than M$N. Some of the new mail features are pretty cool, though, such as highlighting the thread of the selected message.

All up though, I think it was really worth the upgrade. And when my Wacom tablet finally arrives, it will be really cool.
