format start up disk as a single mac os edtened

Hi, i'm new to mac, how do u format the startup disk into a single mac os extended (journaled) volume, plz help thnx

Boot from the OS X Install CD/DVD, open "Disk Utility" from the menubar when you're asked to select a language, highlight your hard drive device on the left-hand side, click the "Partition" tab, then select "1 partition" and away you go.

(And all your files etc. from the harddrive will be gone. Just so there's no misunderstanding here...)
