Free space on Mac mini hard drive

How much hard drive space free should there be on the Mac mini's 40GB hard drive? (i.e. Once the OS, etc is taken into account)

I think given that a 40Gb drive is likely to be about 37Gb formatted, with OSX, iLife, and iWork, you can expect about 32-33 Gb of free space. Don't forget, GarageBand is quite large on it's own, and iDVD takes up quite a bit of space with it's themes etc..

My external 40 GB Firewire hard drive has a capacity of 37.26 GB. I would expect the same from a mini.

That's capacity. Does that include the OS and apps such as GarageBand and iDVD? I think not.

randman, I think he was trying to say that is about what the formatted capacity of the internal 40gig drive on the mini would be also.

i have a 40 gig in my ibook, after i installed the complete os and the dev tools and ilife 04 and route 66 and photoshop 7, i have about 26 gig left.

I know, but since the original poster mentioned the Mini, I was including the apps that'll come with it.

Yep -- I would venture to say that the formatted capacity will be around 37GB, and you're gonna have to subtract at least 2GB for OS X alone, and an extra 3 to 4GB for the iLife '05 suite.

My guess is that there will be right around 30 to 33GB free on the hard drive in the factory-shipping condition.

As far as I know, Pengu, iWork does not come with new computers -- only iLife '05.

Don't forget, there are two sorts of gigabytes - hard-drive-marketing-material-gigabytes, which contain 1,000,000,000 bytes, and everything-else-in-the-world-gigabytes, which contain 1,073,741,824 (= 2 ^ 30) bytes

So a '40 gigabyte' drive will contain 40,000,000,000 bytes, which the OS and every application ever written will report as about 37.25 gigabytes. Formatting information will take up a couple of megs at most.

Then there's maybe 1.5 to 2.5 (real) gigs for the OS, depending on the options that are installed, and maybe another gig or two for all the software that comes installed on there.
