Fresh OS Install Troubles

This is pretty strange.

I have checked the forums for similar issues, but couldn't find anything by searching for keywords from my symptoms.

Here it goes.

A few weeks ago I had trouble with my iBook locking up like crazy, horizontal lines and all that jazz. Sent it to the shop, determined it was the logic board (mother board), got it replaced, now my iBook is back home.

I need to reinstall the OS (10.2). Booting from the first of my two System Install Disks works. I can run through the install.

However, normally, after the first CD install is done, it reboots, and asks for the second so it can install software.

This time, after the first CD install is done, the machine reboots, and comes back trying to boot the OS. All goes well, but when the OS boot is done, it sits there on a Blue Screen (unlike the Windows Blue Screen mind you) like it has gotten through the install, but there are no users created of course, no desktop defined, no software installed, so it just sits there.

I have rebooted, same situation reappears. I tried to reinstall off the first CD, but the same situation keeps occuring.

I am performing a 'delete all' install on HFS btw.

Has anyone seen this before? Any suggestions? I'm baffled.

Thanks for anything!

Hrm, 9 views no responses. Things are looking grim!

I am willing to accept even wild guesses at this point. :-)

I've seen this happen sometimes... Does it do this EVERYtime you try to install, or did you only try once? If it happens every time, it sounds like either a bad repair or a bad system-installation disk (try with a friend's or one from the store...). [I actually heard about this more from Panther beta than Jaguar final versions...]

I've tried 5 times now, happneing every time.

I'm glad you have heard of it before though. I wondering if getting a copy of 10.3 would solve my problems. This pretty ridiculous though.

I have used these CD's before though, immediatly after my hardware troule when I was trying to figure out what was going on....

Any external devices attached?
Have you added extra RAM since purchase? (try removing extra RAM and then install, replace the memory after successful install)
try resetting P-ram before installing (hold opt-command-p and r during boot, let system reset a couple of times while holding those keys)
Wipe the drive before your next try (Boot to the installer CD, at the first screen, before continuing, select disk utility from the installer menu, go to the erase menu, click on your drive and erase the drive from there.

Possible that your first CD is damaged, but try cleaning the disk first.

No external Devices, no added Ram.

I'll try the P-ram thing and erasing from the installer menu before proceeding too.

Then I'll try wipping the disk on my shirt!

Thanks for all the options guys!

pRAM - Chime Chime Chime, holds C to boot from CD.

Got it.

Installer - Open Disk Utility - Erase - Nuke it, right?

Got it.

Didn't have a chance to wipe the disk off on the carpet yet (kidding) but I'll try that if this doesn't work...

OOo... Install didn't give me the option to upgrade, proving that it was clean. Nice. I didn't know about the Installer menu drive erase trick. Kudos.

Just thought I'd ask (after the fact) You did, in fact, want a complete erase of hard drive? Lose everything except for what you have backed up, because it is all gone now......(nice and clean) I hope that the install will allow you to boot again now.....

Doh. Didn't work...

I'll try cleaning the CD now... but seriously that's probably not it huh? Straaaaaaaaaaaaange.

I wish I had a friends CD to borrow or I'd try that.

I'm seriously considering going out and getting 10.3 on my way out today. Do you think that is a crazy idea? If it doesn't solve the problem I'll probably have a hernia. Heh.

[EDIT]

Grrr... that didn't work either. Man. I think I'll go out and grab the CD. Actually I'm leaving the country like, in 6 hours... so if I don't get it now, I'll be suck without a Japanese version of a working OS for a long long time. Now is the time! But if it doesn't solve my problem, I'll be back!

Too late for you, but I'd say that your disk is corrupted. Get a new one and enjoy Japan.

You van get the 10.3 cds from ANYWHERE in the world and it will be essentially be the same. The version sold in Japan has the finder menus in Japanese even when you run the version in ENglish, but otherwise they are the same. You can buy or loan the cds in whatever country where they sell them, Sweden, Korea, Mexico and so on, and STILL be able to install the OS X exactly the way you want it. Which I could guess would be with English and Japanese languages. So if your cds are corrupted, no worries if you get new ones outside Japan.

I was wondering about something related... Do you think something like rainex would fix a scratched disk? It really smoothes out the windshield until you forget you have it on and turn on the wipers. Then it's hell to fix.

I am afraid to try it, I don't want to find out the hard way that it's a good way to trash your cd drive...:D

I'm not recommending it or anything, just wondering if some intrepid soul out there had a wild fling and tried it out...

Might be worth a test, IF you have a bad CD that you have ALREADY replaced, as Rainex is designed for use on glass, and unknown if it would just ruin a plastic surface. (If it works, come back here with a good hint!)

No rainex in Cairo - it just doesn't rain. I had planned on trying it when I was stateside, but too many things got in the way.
