Frozen MacBook

My MacBook froze when I was in the middle of working on a Word document - no cursor or 'bouncing ball'. I switched it off manually and then switched it back on again - only got a grey screen and then a folder symbol with a ? - I assume that something is wrong with my hard drive. How can this be fixed? Any help will be MUCH appreciated!
