G3 Lombard OS 8.6 can't find my Wacom tablet

Hi: I've searched here for an answer to my problem, but haven't found one, so here goes. I hope I can describe it well enough. I recently bought a 333 G3 Powerbook ::sleepy:: I know, but I don't have a lot of money. I got an imate ADB to USB adapter, and plugged in the tablet. The light on the tablet went on when I powered on the computer, and I installed the Intuos GD-0608-A with the original disk. This tablet is about the same vintage as the PB, one year older (1998). Everything seemed to go well. Then I restarted the computer, and a message popped up asking what connection the tablet used, ADB or Serial. I hit ADB, and got something about the tablet not found, check cables, etc. I'm sorry, I don't remember the exact words, and I uninstalled the tablet. I'm not hooked up to the internet on it yet, either, I'm using my PC. If others have had this problem, I expect they'll recognize it, anyway. If not, I'll reinstall the tablet, and copy down the exact message. Maybe there's a driver that tells the computer to look for the tablet on the USB port? Thanks in advance for any help. ... Hadit

Well does the software extension (Classic MacOS word from drivers) support such old system software (OS 8.x)? You may want to upgrade the Powerbook with the last known Classic OS know as OS 9. You can get it fairly cheap right here. Also I think that computer can take up to OS X 10.2.

If the product is from 1998, then all the pro level systems at that point were still using ADB (and didn't come with USB), and the software that came with the tablet most likely wouldn't know to look for the tablet via a USB connection.

Did you try to see if the drivers on the downloads page worked?

That system is supported up to 10.3.9.

RacerX and Satcomer, thanks for your replies:
I looked at the downloads, and don't find any that work with anything earlier than OS 9.0.
Then I looked at the MacSales page, and theirs is OS 9.1 - According to: store.yahoo.com/hardcoremac/, who is selling a really expensive copy, "Many people think a Mac OS 9.0 installation is needed before Mac OS 9.1 can be installed. This is NOT TRUE. If you need Mac OS 9.0, Mac OS 9.1 will work." Which, unless someone here disagrees, takes care of the follow-up question I just edited out, i.e., whether I could use the OS 9.1.
I think the problem must be, as RacerX said, the software doesn't know to look for the tablet on the USB port. Although the PB and the Wacom are contemporaries in manufacture, I guess no one expected anyone would want to use a tablet with a laptop.

The problem with OS X, by the way, is that the tablet itself won't work with it. When searching for answers to my problem on this site, I found lots of sorrow and outrage over that fact.

It might not hurt to try out those drivers anyway... many companies label software for pre-Mac OS X systems as needing Mac OS 9 even if it works on both Mac OS 8.x and 9.x systems.

For most of the foundational stuff, Mac OS 8.6 is equivalent to Mac OS 9.x. I, for example, use iTunes in Mac OS 8.6 even though Apple says it requires Mac OS 9.0.4.

For the small amount of additional features that Mac OS 9 brought, it represented a pretty big jump in memory usage over 8.6... which is why all my older systems (8100, PowerBook 3400 and 2300) are running 8.6 rather than 9.x.

If it doesn't work, then you could go ahead and get the full version of 9.1 as you planned. And if it does work, you save yourself some money and system resources.

OK, RacerX, thanks. I'll try the earliest Wacom driver, and hope that it works. The resource problem with OS 9 bothers me, too. ... Harriet
