My G4 Power Book crashed yesterday, I was running photoshop browser, and when I came back to the computer it had a black screen. I tried to restart it, but I only got a blue screen, no icons at all. I have tried various combinations to restart it. when I held the option key and started it I got 2 arrows on the screen and the watch symbol, after a few minutes the watch stopped moving and nothing would happen. I tried to move the mouse while the watch was moving, it moved very slowly, but don't do anything when clicking on the arrows. I restarted with the install cd for Mac os X. Opened disk utility, but the message I got when I tried to verify the HD was The volume Macintosh HD needs to be repaired.
Volume check failed.
Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit (-9972)
1 volume ckecked
OHSF Volumes varified
1 volume failed varification
First aid gave a similar message. Any ideas other than to reinstall software. As I have files that are not backed up!

Well then fate has bitten you because you hard drive is dying or dead. So the moral of this story is backup, backup, backup!
