g4 powerbook won't register dvd

Hi,

I have a G4 Powerbook 12''. A dvd was stuck in there this morning so i used the startup and mouse button trick to get it out. all clear. tried to put on another dvd, it went in, but the computer doesn't seem to be registering it's presence at all! if i want to eject it i'll have to start up and use the mouse button again. this is a disaster! what can i do??!!!
 
You can hold down the F12 key to eject the optical drive -- no need to restart and hold down the mouse button unless there's some reason you cannot boot into Mac OS X.
