G5 vs 17" PB: choices choices

I am the law!
I FINALLY convinced my boss to buy a mac for me. I've been using an old dual 500Mhz G4 for about a year now - a machine that I brought in from home. I work in an office that is 100% dell / windows and up until now buying an apple has been completely out of the question. It took me 4 years but I finally got the go ahead to buy a machine.

The problem is I can't decide what to get. The contenders are the dual 2.5GHz G5 or the 17" powerbook.

I have a dual 2GHz G5 at home so I was thinking that it would be nice to have a portable to compliment it...but the powerbooks are at the end of their product cycle. I would hope that the G5 powerbook will be coming out in January.

make my decision easier.

Depands on what you gotta do with the book. Since it is for work and you already know how fast a Dual G5 can be, you need to judge.
If performance is not so important, I would definitely go for the powerbook.

Have you heard something we haven't? The PowerBooks are not at the end of their cycle, as far as I know, and many people are expecting another update to them early next year... don't hold your breath for a G5 PowerBook, though, and expecting a G5 to make its way into one as early as January is out of the question.

If you've got a dual 2GHz G5 at home, go for the PowerBook -- but ask yourself -- will you be using this computer at a desk at work a lot? If so, you may weigh the advantages of a desktop over a laptop for that situation.

Ah, good site! Didn't know about that one!

It does say in the links under the PowerBook that there won't be any updates until 2005, and not to expect a G5 PowerBook anytime soon, though... I think the updates to the PowerBook line will be minimal -- a processor bump of a few hundred MHz, perhaps -- and MAYBE a move to a dual-core processor, but I doubt it. I don't think it'll be anything significant that'll make you regret your purchase of a PowerBook now. Those 17" machines sure are nice.

Besides, how can you regret it when it's free?! ;) :D
