garageband 4 not loading old songs

Hello, I have recently upgraded to leopard from panther, I also installed I-life 2008.
the version of garageband on the panther OS was very early, I think 1.1 or something.
the version from I-life 2008 is 4.1.2
prior to the upgrade, I copied some 25 completed songs to a stick from panther/garageband 1.1, just in case.

I now find the newer version of garageband will not open the old songs.
Interestingly, the newer version converted about 4 of the old songs to the new format, and will play them ok, but will not load any of the others?

I can find no discernable difference between the ones it converted and the ones it won't?

I have tried to change the file extensions to .band but to no avail

I really have no idea about what to try next other than re-installing panther and trying to re-save the songs, however, I am rather unwilling to do this as I have lots of things I don't want to lose.

Are you aware of any conversion process I could use to convert these songs as to be acceptable to the new version of GB ?

or are there any 'tweaks' I can make to the project data files etc ?

I realise version 1.1 is a very old program, and there have been a lot of changes leading to 4.1.2, but there must be a way to do this surely?

thanks for your time.

No, it's actually academic now as I've reinstalled leopard because I accidentally erased most of my applications, songs, pictures etc whilst trying to work it out (don't ask! it's really annoying!).... but thanks for your interest.
