hey, i'm used to using a windoze pc where i had to regularly perform maintenance on it (defrag, clean up program folders, check disks, etc) i downloaded a version of norton sys works to try and there really isnt anything in it to do cleanup like cleansweep for the pc. do macs require some maintenance every now and then or what? if so is there a terminal command or some other hidden prgram that does this in the mac or will i have to download some software specifically for doing this. basically i want to keep my mac lean and clean. the drag and drop uninstall of many programs from the apps folder seems to easy, where are all the program files? help me out pleaseeee. thanks alot. you guys rock!

Repairing permissions is something you should do... weekly, perhaps.

Applications>Utilities>Disk Utility, or for better results, run DU off the disc you got with your Mac. :)

Norton is notorious for causing more problems in OSX than solving. Using a hacked version is more stupid. Bragging about it is monumentally stupid.

Wow. That's a keeper. lol.

No, with a Mac, program removal is pretty easy. Drag the program to the trash. Empty the trash. You're pretty-much done.... granted, if you really want to, you could remove the preference file that belongs to the app, in /users/yourname/library/preferences ... but those things are usually around 4k... and in these modern multi-gigabyte times, who really cares?

Yup. Programs and preference files. That's pretty much it.

I don't know if this would be considered "maintenance," but you should keep about 15% to 20% of your hard drive's capacity free. Don't fill your hard drive up -- if you've got a 20GB drive, keep around 4GB free. For a 100GB, keep around 20GB free. If you fill your hard drive up, you may end up corrupting the data that is on there.

I can attest to that! I thrashed my hard drive and ended up corrupting the volume header files. What a joy that was! ;)

Pick any program icon, (actually it's a special folder), and ctrl-click on it, from the menu pick "Show Package Contents", here you'll find the bulk of the files associated program files.
So when you drag to the trash to "uninstall" these files are all trashed.

I also thought this was all too simple, when I first moved to Apple, but it works and ya gotta love it.
