Good Spell Checker??

Looking for a good realtime spell checker that is Panther Compliant in any application.

I'd like corrections done in realtime as I type with customizable dictonairy etc.

I just use the built-in AppleSpell, no need to configure anything, it's available by a control-click, or a right click if you have a 2-button scroll mouse. Right-click after selecting a suspect word shows a list of possible correct spellings. If correct (for you) just click on learn, and that adds to custom dictionary. I think the internal dictionary might be a little rudimentary, but works well for my needs whenever I try it. You can also go to the Edit menu on most applications, choose spelling, and select Check Spelling As You Type. If that is not available, then the internal spell checking is just not available to that application.
Type in 'spell checking' in Apple Help, which gives you information about using the built-in spell check.

Thanks ....

Downloaded CocoAspell and installed it. Doesn't seem to work when I'm typing this although it is working in some other apps.

It doesn't auto fix spelling mistakes just notifies you with a red underscore if it thinks something is wrong ... correct? I was hoping to find something (shareware or commercial) that might auto correct as you type.

IMHO overkill!, how do you know the auto-correction was what you wanted (and doesn't work too well anyway, if there's several options) better to have misspellings pointed out, and give you the choice (even to accept a wrong spelling, because that's what you want) than just auto-fix

You might check out SpellCatcher X. Batch and interactive spellchecking global across all apps and OSX elements including Finder.

I have used SpellCatcher (in older OS9.x too for years) X in Jaguar without problems. Rainmakerinc.com now has distribution of SpellCatcher X.

There are some bugs in current version (mostly bugs in OSX Panther 10.3 they say) but it does seems to work more or less okay and Rainmakerinc.com says they are at work on fix for Panther.

Good spellchecker although I miss the completeness of very old Spelling Coach Pro orphaned by Denaba in OS 8-9 days, which was a quirky interface but good spellchecker.

Thanks for the info. I am already on the case with Spell Catcher. It looks like my ticket. The website says that version 10.1 should be out soon to deal more directly with Panther issues. I think I will wait until this version is released then purchase.
