grey screen!

I have a mac G4 tower. The os was upgraded a few months ago with no problems.
My husband I installed a new DVD burner two days ago. We replaced the old lite-on burner with a new one because the old one had simply stopped working. But certainly the same brand that worked before.
When we reconnected all things, the computer would not start up. We hear the familiar "bong" and then just get a gray screen. Sometimes it goes to the folder/question mark icon. Sometimes to the X.
I disconnected the new burner in case that was the glitch and that didn't change anything.
I reset the PMU. Same thing. I removed the battery, same thing.
Installing a new CD/DVD burner is not new to me, and should not have left my computer dead. But obviously something went wrong.
Please advise on possible issues and hopefully solutions.
Thank you!

Boot with the 'option' key held down. It will take a couple of minutes and it should find any bootable partition. If it doesn't something screwed up.
