Hard Drive Size recognition?

I bought a 120GB Seagate HD. The OS recognizes the size to be 111GB. What happened to 7 or 8 GB of HD space?

What you're experiencing is the conversion from binary to decimal notation. Perfectly normal. All drives format out to slightly less capacity than advertised.

In engineering terms 1 KB = 1024 Bytes (which is 2 to the power of 10).
Thus, 120 GB is really (120 GB * 1.024) = 122,880,000,000 Bytes

Your 120 GB (122,880,000,000 B) hard disk drive, hdd, has a 111 GB (113,664,000,000 B) user accessible capacity, because every Operating System, OS, needs an area of the hdd to contain its volume bit map and other related information - from which the OS can then properly store any user requested data.

120 GB Western Digital hdds are typically identified as having capacities of 111.62+ GB.

ok, thanks....it just seems weird it needs 9 GB for volume bit map and other information. I calculated the conversion from decimal to binary notation and I got 111 GB

thank you all for your help
