Your PowerBook will take a 500GB hard drive just fine, as long as the hard drive is within the space constraints and has the correct connector (PATA/IDE). Most laptop drives being sold are SATA, which are incompatible with the PATA connector on the PowerBook G4s -- make sure you're getting the correct one.

I haven't seen any 2.5-inch 500GB PATA/IDE drives. I'm not sure that any exist. I think that all of the recent, larger 2.5-inch drives have been SATA-only.

In fact, doing a quick search, it is very hard to find a 2.5-inch PATA drive at all anymore. The largest that I could find doing a quick search was a 250GB one:

HITACHI 250gb 0A33408 IDE PATA 7200rpm 8mb
$51

Also make sure that any drive that you get doesn't run too hot for your model of Powerbook, and that it won't run down your battery too quickly.

Most Powerbooks used 5400rpm drives, but you can find drives that spin faster (sometimes as much as 10,000rpm's) on the market. Their extra speed might equal better performance, but they also might run hotter and give you noticeably less time per battery charge.

Thank you guys, I thought that macosx would tell me by email when my question was answer'd, but your right, the biggest i could find was a 320 gig on newegg, and it comes with an external enclosure as a combo price, so i think ill just put my 60 gig in that. Thanks alot

You can set in the preferences to get an email of by thread or any update you want.
Those 250 GB / 320 GB will do fine for you - and can always get an external drive too if more space is needed. :)
