Harpertown/Penryn hard drive options

Replacing my ancient G4 dual 450 with a 2.8Ghz 8 core. Apple "formally" says it can use four 1Tb drives. Will it recognize a 2Tb drive, or is this like the dual 450, which would only see 120Gb of any internal hd, no matter the actual size?

Thanks for any info.

Hi,

The 120GB limit is as ancient as your G4 ;-) . You will get every byte out of 2TB drive ( and probably out of 3TB and upcomming 4TB drives) in a Mac Pro. I Do.

However Mac Pro only support SATA drives in standard disk "drawers". The harpertown still has IDE optical drive so you can use one G4 IDE disk in the Mac Pro if you put it in the second optical bay, you can use two if you remove the DVD drive.

It's very simple to connnect the unused SATA ports on the logic board for an SATA DVD burner or two, or put one hard drive in the second optical drive bay. All you need is the correct SATA cables.
