Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit

Disk Utility stopped verifying “Macintosh HD” because the following error was encountered:

The underlying task reported failure on exit
1 HFS volume checked
Volume needs repair

Is my internal hard drive about to go bad? I have an external 80 G I use to back up the internal with Super Super.

Please help, I would most appreciate it.

Paul

Boot into single-user mode. Run fsck (File System Check). Here's how:
Restart. As your computer reboots, press [Apple]-. It will boot into fullscreen commandline (console mode). At the prompt, type fsck -fy. If any repairs are required, they will be reported. In this case, rerun fsck -fy. If not, type exit. Your computer will exit the commandline environment and boot into the GUI.

Thank you for your help! I really appreciate it. I didn't even KNOW the computer could do that. I have printed out your reply and will keep it in a file in case this happens again.

Paul

If fsck -fy can't fix it, your hard drive may be failing. I hope you have a backup handy when you have to get another hard drive.
