just downloaded the os x drivers for this old hp 882c. installed ok but i'm getting stuck at the Printer List window b/c it won't auto "discover" the printer and I have no idea what the IP addy is to enter it manually...

What exactly should I do here?

thanks,
bradelectro

This printer is USB is it not? Plus, did you try to ADD the printer through the Print Center?

The IP is for networked printers. You should be in the USB section of print center.

thanks for the replies.

This is not a USB printer- it's serial. So when I try to add a printer, I'm not USB, not IP, so what am I?

thanks,
brad

Brad...

Try this in the terminal:
lpinfo -v

if the printer is recognized by your machine it will show up in the list with the addresss path for you. Copy the resulting line into cups, or print center.

if you use print center after you open it, hold down the "option" key, then click on "add" and you should now have an item named "advanced".

Does this help?

Hi bossa nova-

I tried it and it gave me this list:
network pap
network socket
network http
network ipp
network lpd
direct usb
network mdns

Hmmm...so am I totally out of luck or what?

well I did find something called hp inkjet utility in my apps...prob installed along with the os x drivers I got from HP. it's just a window that says 'select printer' and has a drop-down menu that contains nothing but 'usb.' er, can't do much with it.

Jeez I like usb too but hey, it's an old printer.

Thanks for everyone's help.

There is a workaround. Do you have a USB port on your computer? Get a serial to usb converter from Beilkin. You will be able to use the usb driver and the printer.

Be warned of serial to usb connectors. Are you absolutely positive that your Deskjet 882c does not have a USB connector? There should be a USB and a Parallel connector.
Typically, when you add the printer in the print center, it should show up under USB. “HP DeskJet IP” Is what you might of seen if you’ve installed the driver for the DeskJet 6127. the proper driver is the 2.0f driver at ftp.hp.com
