Help needed with PDF files

Ok I created a PDF file using AbiWord on Linux that can be viewed fine using Acrobat Reader 5.0 on Linux and Acrobat Reader 7.07 on Windows and Mac OS X.

When I view that PDF file on OS X, the default viewer is some "Preview" app of some sort and the PDF file looks like garbage. How do I make Acrobat Reader the default app for PDF files on OS X? We're running Tiger 10.4.

Thanks!

Peace...

Select the .pdf file and hit Cmnd (Apple) + I to Get Info. Near the bottom, where it says "Open With..." choose Acrobat Reader. Then, before you close the window, click the button that says "Change All" just below.

Now, all files that end in .pdf will open in Reader.

I have a related problem. I cannot get Safari to use Adobe Reader to open PDF files. Adobe is set as the default PDF reader and will open PDF files opened from disk. But not in Safari.

I have run "Detect and Repair" and it says all components are installed. However, I don't see Reader listed in the plugin section. I have also seen instructions for reinstalling Safari, however, when I go to the Apple site I don't find the current version of Safari that comes with the Intel system.

This may be a problem with Safari because I cannot get it to install the Windows Media Player plug in either, so I can't view WMV files in Safari.

I am running the Intel dual core system.

Any suggestions? Thanks!

By default, Safari uses the QuickTime plug-in for PDFs. Go into the QuickTime preferences pane. Click the Advanced tab and then click the MIME Settings... button. Scroll down to the Images - Still Image Files arrow. Click the arrow. Uncheck PDF Image.

Thanks for the tip, but still doesn't work. PDF is unchecked. I can't tell what Safari is opening the PDF with (preview or quicktime), but it's not Adobe.

Actually, I don't care that much which app it uses to open PDF. My main complaint with the default is that it opens the PDF into a page view that, as far as I can tell, cannot be zoomed, so it's hard to read the text.

Thanks

I guess I got lucky. I followed the instructions above, that worked flawlessly (thanks again!), and Safari is able to open local and remote PDF files using Adobe Acrobat Reader 7.07 without problems.

Peace...
