Now I have just made the conversion from pc to mac. How do I install a .pdf printer? Is this something I have to buy? I used to print to a generic postscript printer on my PC and need the same option to make PostScript files from InDesign.
I have tried researching this question but keep hitting deadends

OS X has the ability to print to print to PDF right from the print dialog window in a program. You should see a "PDF" button (or something similarly named) right on that dialog window. This will also show up on any program due to the fact that Mac OS X has built-in PDF creation capabilities.

Be aware that the built-in PDF creation may not have the level of control you're used to -- if you want to create high-resolution, press-ready PDFs, I would suggest using the "PDF" menu as nixgeek suggests, but instead choosing a "PostScript" file and then distilling with Distiller.

Mac OS X just doesn't have the level of control over the quality of the PDFs that you may be looking for.

Have a look at:

http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8197.html

The above tends to create high quality PDF's, but also huge PDF file sizes. You can reduce the size of a PDF easily and without the need for any software other than what comes with your Macintosh running OS X.

Open your PDF file in Preview (in your Applications folder),
Choose Save As from the File menu,
at the bottom of the Save As dialog box choose Format: PDF
and next to Quartz Filter choose Reduce File Size.

If the above doesn't give you the fine control that you want in trading off file size with graphic quality,
use Colorsync to reduce PDF file size instead:
