HELP: random kernel panics

I've had more kernel panics in the last 3 days than in the last 6 years of mac ownership. I cannot pinpoint the sequence of activities that causes the panics; it happens when I wake the laptop from sleep, twice when I was starting it up and sometimes when I'm doing nothing at all. I've attached the last kernel panic report. Major changes to the system this year have been: upgrading of HD to a Western Digital 500GB, upgrading of RAM, 'switching' permanently to the 64-bit kernel. Changing of the HD has brought up the well documented problem of random 'knocks' as the heads are 'parked'...and I've always executed the command to increase the HD-speed to max. I've noticed that since the frequent kernel panics started, the command fails. Does it mean the HD is failing?
