Hello All,

I am from the USA and am currently in Japan on business until later this week. I just updated my system to 10.2.8 and after start-up my desktop screen appeared grossly dicolored and washed-out with horizontal lines throughout the whole screen.

Typically, I never do any updates on any of my systems while away from home without all of my restore/install disks and I guess I shouldn't have. I've been a "Apple/MAC junkie" and "unofficial spokesman" since the days of "Leisure Suit Larry" :-). I've converted avid PC users around the globe and I am completely baffled by this. I know that it has to be a simple glitch hopefully with a simple fix but why would apple do an update with a sever problem like this?

Now i'm lost in translation because very few people that I have been around on this trip speak fluent english enough to help.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm in big trouble every second that goes by without my machine functioning properly because I can barely even see what I am typing along with not being able to read any of the category menus. Hence, please excuse me if I have mistakes.

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

restart while holding command+option+p+r
hold it down until you have heard it chime twice.
this will reset the p-ram (including your monitor settings).

just in case: CMD+OPT+P+R

Thanks for the response.
I just tried zapping the p-ram with no luck. I truly appreciate the help though. :-(

in that case hold shift after restarting to "safe-boot" this disables many extraneous startup items/extensions and checks you system for errors.
(be aware that it might seem to take a while as in the beginning the disk check performs without showing anthing. just wait a bit.)

also does it look this way from the beginning or only once you log in?
and what did you upgrade from?

[edit]start up normally before doing the following[/edit]
under /applications/utilities/ open "colorsync profiler" and repair you profiles your problems may be caused by a bad color profile.
if nothing changes after this open system preferences from the apple menu and look at your display settings, try changing them around (i.e. select a different resolution or profile) this may solve your problem.

Sorry for the delayed response, I can barely read the screen or see the mouse pointer. My browser keeps unexpectanly quitting too.

When I first start up the computer the apple screen shows up fine while its loading up and then it goes bad when the desktop opens. I upgraded from 10.2.3 I think. It was a tiger disk and not Jaguar that I've been using on this machine since I got it. I remember something similar to this happened before and I had to restore the software. If that's the case then I'm definitely "up the creek." :-(

I also tried the colorsync profile and the display settings before I posted. I open the firmware and reset-all and I tried to zap the p-ram for seven chimes because that cleared up some other problems that I had on my G4 at home.

I'm going to try the safe-boot that you suggested and let you know how it turns out.

Many Thanks...

Damn, no luck with safe-boot either but I truly appreciate all your help so far.

hmm... let me get this straight u ran software update for 10.2.3 to get the final version of 10.2 which is 10.2.8. correct?
the thing is you mentioned tiger (10.4)

a fix which usually does _something_ good is to download and reinstall mac osx 10.2.8 combined update
this will overwrite 10.2.3 updates as well and may very likely fix most software problems involving corrupted files.

Also remember to check to see if there was a firmware update done to your Mac model between those to upgrade points.
