I installed a seagate ata drive as a slave drive, started computer it opened up and I started formatting the drive when Bam! We lost power and now my computer will not start up with the drive connected. My mac is a G4 and all I get is a question mark on a blue screen searching for files. So I removed the disk and everything is working fine. So how do I formate the disk from start up?

Try booting off your install disks (hold "c" or "option" on bootup), then run disk utility from them to format the drive.

If it still hangs when booting up with the startup disc, try this, it worked for me...Open the G4 and unclip the cable to the drive in question, (not the power cable). Boot up, wait for the system to start loading then reconnect the cable. Hopefully the drive will mount or at least be seen by Disc Utility. If the system hangs when connecting the disc then you may well have fried the disc.

Thanks for the information. I tried using disk utility. It will not find either hard drives. I have not tried hooking the cable up as it is starting, I haven't the room to do both and the guts today, maybe later. Is there any other way?

Don't disconnect the cables.
Try resetting the CUDA or PMU depending on the model you have.
This is a small button on the Logic board.

Do I insert the slave drive again and reset or reset now. While computer is off? Can you give me some more info?

To reset the CUDA or PMU, you would disconnect the power, open the machine. There's a small button near the battery on the Logic Board. Push only ONCE, then power up.

It is a G4 Quick Silver. I will try reseting the button. Thanks everyone for all your help. I will keep you inform of the progress. I will be away from my computer for a while so I wil reset later.
