How are things installed in Jaguar

I login as myself in Jaguar and I am the administrator. I am confused about how things are installed. How do you install programs in Jaguar so that all users have the right to execute them? What about printers? Some people have told me that they installed a printer as the administrator and that the other users were not able to user the printer.
I know in Unix you can give everyone permission to execute a file but then that path has to be in the users path. How does Jaguar handle this.

Just install in the main Applications folder. Your individual Preferences sit in his/her's user folder. The paths are as follows.

Programs= Applications
Preferences= ~/Library/Preferences/

~ <--- this symbol represents a users "home" folder.

I don't know how someone did this. However it is clear to me that it would take to long to explain the in and outs of OS X. maybe you should try a Mac OS X book. It will put your mind at ease.

I know what you mean. I have looked at the many OSX books out there. They seem to steer clear of these kinds of issues. I guess because the average user doesn't care about it, of course unitl it happens to them. Thanks for the response.

if anything is being made available to only the admin, look for it in the folders in his home folder inside the users folder. move it to the shared folder inside the users folder. now all can have access.

Could something like running the Permissions Checker fix a problem with only certain accounts being able to access things? I'm not sure, but just a thought.

if it is something that is in a shared location and not being accessed by all, then yes it could.
